History of a Miracle Part 3
The details of the second
hospitalization
Wednesday, June 26
To
family:
Grandpa Ken fell in the night after
getting up to the bathroom, and couldn't get back up. His mind was clear,
but he couldn't walk or dress. I called Hermana Martinez and the zone
leaders and again a zone leader drove us to Temuco. We are now waiting for Dr.
Rivas. We still don't know if it is just low sodium in the blood or
return of vasculitis or what. Or if it is the sodium, why?
To President Martinez:
Not a stroke. No brain hemorrhage,
no vasculitis, no thrombosis. But he does have a bad sinus infection. Right leg
is very weak. The body is remembering that things used to be bad. Hermana
Babcock
Translation
of Email to Sister Martinez:
We wait. We have only seen Dr.
Rivas. Other physicians need to come. Dr. Rivas if it is bacterial or fungal or
why the infection is so bad. It is a
secondary effect of the cortisone. We hope. We spoke with Dr. Suazo, the ear doctor. The
infection is bacterial and Elder Babcock has intravenous antibiotics. There were unusual symptoms and lack of
symptoms to help the doctors recognize it last week. It is difficult, because no one can explain in
English and no one tried to do it in Spanish. Or perhaps I cannot understand
what they said and the names of medications. I'm staying at the clinic at
night. Sometimes the doctors come very late
I talked with Dr Mikesell and he
called me with a list of things to ask when talking to Dr. Rivas morning. Thank
you for your suggestion to call him. We are waiting again. Dr. Rivas doesn’t want
to do anything that would spread the sinus infection and Elder Babcock also needs
to be more stable and have more control of his movements before they do an MRI
of the spine. Much interest from the doctors. They are going to do a lot to
understand and help. Love, Sister Babcock
Doctor
Suazo, ear doctor came in and said they had started antibiotics. Doctora Concha
came and said she was going to have Dr. Suazo do a mini surgery clean up and
maybe take a biopsy to culture to see exactly what they are dealing with. She
wants to push them to see why the sodium goes low. Ken did well for her but
after she left he went to the bathroom with a bit of help, but as he was
getting ready to come back to bed his right arm and leg went dead again. It
took Daniel, a big man, and a chair to get him back to bed. We got Dr. Concha
back and she got Dr. Rivas back. He was able to move more for Dr. Rivas. But he
wants to do a spinal MRI tomorrow and other things, but they have to get him
stable. He is cold and shivery. They don't want to do anything to spread the
sinus infection. I called the mission doctor who called a neurosurgeon in Salt
Lake and gave me a list of things to ask about tomorrow. So we still need
faithful prayers.
I will spend the night in the clinic. Sorry about the typos. The
computer needs charging and I brought only one plug adapter so I have to charge
one at a time. I can buy another one tomorrow.
