Tuesday, May 14 – One
week out
Yesterday marked the end of our first week out of the clinic.
We went back for an appointment with the ear doctor. After the
trial of making it through the reception desk and figuring how much money we
had to pay for the visit and how to do it when they didn't have a receipt to
give me and wanted cash, the visit went well.
It was the longest conversation I have had with the doctor, and we understood each other. Ken helped too of course and was able to converse in Spanish. The doctor was visible delighted. He was on the team that met him when he came into the clinic and he had seen him at his worst several times.
Dr. Suazo used a magnifier that showed the ear on a large monitor. Ken has tubes in both ears and no infections. He was given instructions to keep water out of his ears. No snorkeling. The easiest way to keep out water during a shower is to plug your ears with cotton balls dipped in Vaseline.
The hole between brain and ear is closed. The tubes will come out by themselves, probably in about 8 months. We have a hearing test scheduled for a month from yesterday.
I am slowly figuring out the medications Ken is on and trying to do a more accurate job of administering them. I can't find any insulin on the list. I will look again today. More research online and I may have to communicate with the clinic or doctor.
